Get in

By plane

Malabo International Airport

International carriers include Ceiba (3 flights a week from Madrid), Turkish Airlines (from Istanbul), Air France (from Paris), Ethiopian Airlines (from Addis Ababa), Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Malabo, Royal Air Maroc, and Ethiad. There are a few regional airlines offering service to surrounding countries and to Bata on the mainland: Ceiba and Chronos. Travel on these internal carriers should be duly considered, as there is no capability of enforcing airworthiness standards in Equatorial Guinea and air traffic control is marginal at best. Ethiopian Airlines, the airline with the most international destinations within Africa, flies 3 times per week with connections through cities such as Douala and their main hub in Addis Ababa. Aero Contractors flies to Malabo from Lagos, Nigeria en route Libreville every Tuesday and Saturday. A Boeing 737-400 is used for this route.

Get around

The only feasible way to get around the island is to hire a tour guide. However, because the country does not see many tourists, there are very few tour guides, and even fewer that speak English. The only recommended driver on the island who speaks English is Eulogio (WhatsApp +240222620882).

That said, the state of the roads and infrastructure is excellent, owing to the significant oil money flowing into the government's coffers.

Local reading and routes

Bioko: an island of volcanic relief

Pico Basilé is one of Bioko’s natural landmarks and is protected as a national park. The tourism ministry also highlights Ureka’s waterfalls in the island’s south. They offer two different landscapes around which to organise a journey.

Choose a base and enquire separately about each outing. Before booking, ask about transport, guiding, weather conditions and access to the specific location. Do not assume every viewpoint or trail is freely accessible.

Batete, Bisila and cultural context

Government information includes Batete’s church and the shrine of the Virgin of Bisila among the territory’s cultural landmarks. They provide an opportunity to include architecture and religious traditions in a visit often focused on nature.

Ask about each place’s context and suitable times to enter. If a celebration is taking place, follow participants’ guidance and agree on photography; the visit should adapt to the building’s living use.

Ureka and conservation

The government has documented the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program’s work with local institutions and the Ureka community. That work connects forest and coast with research, education and conservation.

When seeking an experience in the south, ask who organises it and how the community participates. Confirm which activities are actually available; a conservation programme’s existence does not mean it receives visitors without prior arrangements.
