## Understand
History
People who spoke Austronesian languages first arrived in Sumatra around 500 BC, as part of the Austronesian expansion from to . With its location in the India-China sea trade route, several trading towns flourished, especially in the eastern coast, and were influenced by Indian religions and the Srivijaya Buddhist monarchy in particular.

The Srivijayan influence waned in the 11th century and Sumatra was then subject to conquests from nese kingdoms. At the same time Islam made its way to Sumatra through Arabs and Indian traders in the 6th and 7th centuries. Marco Polo visited the island in 1292. The powerful Aceh Sultanate ruled from this time into the 20th century. With the coming of the Dutch, the many Sumatran princely states gradually fell under their control. , in the north, was the major obstacle, as the Dutch were involved in the long and costly Aceh War (1873–1903).

Sumatra came under the control of the Dutch East Indies and became a major producer of pepper, rubber, and oil. In the early and mid-twentieth century, Sumatran academics and leaders were important figures in Indonesia's independence movements before full independence was gained in 1945.

The 2004 Tsunami
The Great Sumatran fault runs the entire length of the island along its west coast. On 26 December 2004, the western coast and islands of Sumatra, particularly province, were struck by a tsunami following the Indian Ocean earthquake. More than 170,000 Indonesians were killed, primarily in Aceh. Major earthquakes involving fatalities struck Sumatra in 2002 and 2007 and 2009.

## Get in
By plane
, as the largest city on the island, has the most flights including many international services to , , and . , , , , and also have scheduled international services. Other airports such as , , , , Jambi and Silangit near are served by domestic flights from Jakarta.

By bus
There are bus services from Java to various parts of Sumatra. Whilst most originate from Jakarta, there are services from Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Malang.

Most of the buses are in good condition and passengers are provided with blankets as trips take more than a day and the air conditioning can be freezing cold. As domestic low-cost carriers are not as cheap for long-distance trips, some passengers combine flights with a bus trip, such as flying from Jakarta to Pekanbaru, and then taking the bus to Medan. Luxury buses and sleeper buses are also available in the - route (Rp. 220,000 and up as of 2025).

By boat
The ferry between the port of on the island of Java (100 km west of ) and Bakauheni in the far south of Sumatra ( province) takes 1.5/3 hours (express/regular). Some passengers choose to travel by night, when it is cooler.

In addition, there are numerous ferry services connecting Sumatra to as well as other Indonesian islands. The main port is in Riau, which is a visa-upon-arrival point and has direct links to (3 hr), and (2.5 hr and costs 550,000 Rp (2024)) in Malaysia, as well as to the Indonesian island of near . Other ports that have ferry service to Malaysia are Batam, Tanjung Balai Asahan, Bengkalis and Karimun.

There are round-the-clock ferry services from Singapore to Batam, Bintan, and Karimun.

## Get around
By car
The Trans-Sumatran Highway (Jalan Trans-Sumatera), a 2,508.5 km road, connects the entire island of Sumatra from north to south. It passes through most major cities like Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru and Bandar Lampung. If you are not familiar with the routes, rent one with a driver. Driving yourself is dangerous, although the roads are well-paved, as sharp curves are not signed adequately. Night driving is not advisable.

The Trans-Sumatra Toll Road (Jalan Tol Trans-Sumatera) is a network of toll roads connecting the major cities and ports of Sumatra. Construction of the network began in 2014, with most of the network supplanting the Trans-Sumatra Highway when completed; until 2014, the only toll road in Sumatra is around Medan. As of 2025, parts of the network are open to traffic, such as between and and between , and , with some partially completed segments opened around Jambi and Pekanbaru. The network also includes some partially-completed spur routes which serve the cities on the Indian Ocean coastline to the south such as and .

By train
The only useful railway service runs from Bandar Lampung in the very south of Sumatra to Palembang (400 km) and to Lubuklinggau. From Medan there a few trains a day to , Tanjungbalai and . There are also a few train services around Padang, including one line connecting with the airport.

## See
Nature is the primary attraction of Sumatra. There are jungles, volcanoes and lakes. The rainforest of this island is so important that, in 2006, 25,000 km² was declared a as The Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra. This area comprises three distinct national parks, the , and .

Perhaps the most notable specific attraction is the endemic Sumatran Orangutan (smaller and rarer than the only other species of orangutan which is endemic to ). These are restricted to the northern parts of the island and perhaps the easiest place to see them is at in the .

Rarer still are the tiny populations of critically endangered Sumatran Tiger and Sumatran Rhinoceros. The chances of casual visitor glimpsing one of these are slim, but you never know.

Also in the north, is the world's largest volcanic lake and a popular stop on the backpacker trail.

In a nation of active volcanoes, Mount Kerinci in , is the highest of them all at some 3,805 metres.

## Do
Trekking is an obvious attraction, with countless peaks to scale and real opportunities to get right away from it all.

Offshore, Sumatra has some of the best surfing anywhere on earth with the and being especially notable.

Furthermore up north is a paradise for divers.

## Eat
Sumatra's most famous contribution to Indonesian cuisine is nasi padang white steamed rice served with numerous curries and other toppings. It was created in , but has been assimilated throughout Indonesia.

As well as being a popular and delicious option in nasi padang, rendang is a dry beef curry-type dish. It is prepared by slowly cooking the beef in coconut milk and spices for several hours until almost all the liquid is gone, allowing the meat to absorb the spicy condiments. It is typically served with steamed white rice.

## Drink
Beer is widely available in all areas except Aceh Province. Spirits are not widely available. The locals drink tuak, which is the fermented fruit of the palm tree. It is an acquired taste to say the least but local men drink it by the bagful.

## Stay safe
Be careful if you take the Trans-Sumatra road, as there are pirate-style robbers known as Bajing Loncat (lit. jumping squirrels), especially at night. They will jump to your vehicle from the trees or their vehicle to carjack or steal some stuff from your vehicle, even if it means they have to kill you.

## Stay healthy

The whole of Sumatra is a zone; talk to a doctor about whether you need to take medication.

Drink only bottled , and to be totally safe also use only bottled water when you brush your teeth.

In the dry season, local farmers often set fire to the forest to clear land for farming, often resulting in a thick haze. This may cause problems for those with respiratory diseases.

## Go next

can be accessed by ferry from the port of Bakauheni in Lampung.

Ferries run from in Riau to , and in .

Plan your itinerarySumatra requires choices: its cities, volcanic lakes, mountains, forests and archipelagos do not fit comfortably into one short journey. The north combines Medan, Batak culture and Lake Toba scenery; the west opens another trip through Minangkabau towns, valleys and coastline. Southern and eastern provinces add river histories and less direct connections between areas. Islands grouped with Sumatra by Wikivoyage, such as Bangka-Belitung and the Riau Islands, need their own transport arrangements. Choose two neighbouring regions or connect travel blocks by air, leaving time to walk, eat and meet communities. Rain and slow journeys call for flexibility; wildlife sightings depend on the environment and can never be guaranteed.

### Getting around
Plan by region and do not underestimate road travel times.

### Plan ahead
For wildlife use responsible guides and maintain distance without feeding animals.

### Culture and pace
Ask about local norms: customs vary widely between provinces and communities.

### Choose two connected regions
Build a northern, western or southern corridor before connecting distant ends. For a long jump, compare flying with actual road time and the overnight stops it requires.

### Treat islands as separate stays
Check ferries, flights and local transfers before adding Nias, Mentawai, Bangka-Belitung or the Riau Islands. A possible connection does not imply daily operation or suitability in every condition.

### Allow flexibility for forest and mountains
Allow for rain and changes to trails, rivers or visibility. Arrange nature outings with suitable guides and keep alternative days; avoid feeding or pursuing wildlife for photographs.

### Aceh
Banda Aceh brings together mosques, history and remembrance of the tsunami, while Weh offers an island stay centred on the sea. The Takengon highlands and rainforest gateways open different routes. Learn about local customs and choose between coast and interior before trying to combine all these landscapes in one visit.

Allow roughly 6–9 days for Banda Aceh and Weh; add another block for the highlands or rainforest.

### Bangka-Belitung
These two islands off Sumatra combine beaches with large granite boulders, coastal towns and Malay and Chinese heritage. Each island needs its own transport and time. Choose one as a base for exploring shores and neighbourhoods rather than assuming that both form a single continuous overland excursion from the mainland.

Allow roughly 4–6 days for one island, or 7–10 for both if connections permit an unhurried combination.

### Bengkulu
Bengkulu city introduces a coast with colonial history and connections to Sukarno before journeys towards inland landscapes. Fort Marlborough anchors an urban visit. Outings to forests or in search of rafflesia flowers require guidance and realistic expectations: flowering depends on timing and cannot be guaranteed for a particular visit.

Allow roughly 3–5 days for the city and a nature outing arranged around local conditions.

### Jambi
Jambi combines two contrasting settings: the city and the remains of Muaro Jambi in the lowlands, and the mountain area of Kerinci and Sungai Penuh to the west. Lakes, cultivated landscapes and trails need their own bases. Choose a historical or mountain focus before linking both through lengthy transfers.

Allow roughly 5–8 days for one sector; combining the lowlands and Kerinci requires additional transfer time.

### Lampung
Lampung is a southern gateway from Java, with Bandar Lampung as an urban reference point and coastlines offering different journeys. Krui attracts surfers, while forest areas require dedicated programmes. Choose one coastal stretch or a nature experience; not every excursion can be comfortably organised as a day trip from the capital.

Allow roughly 4–7 days for one coastal or natural area, including transfers from the arrival gateway.

### North Sumatra
Medan offers a food-focused introduction before Lake Toba and Batak culture, or the Berastagi highlands. Bukit Lawang and Tangkahan open other forest-oriented routes. Nias needs a separate island stay. A journey through a few carefully chosen bases combines contrasting landscapes without giving entire days repeatedly to long transfers between them.

Allow roughly 8–12 days for a mainland triangle; Nias requires additional connections and overnight stays.

### Riau
Mainland Riau is shaped by rivers, Pekanbaru and historical places such as Siak and Muara Takus. Its urban and heritage itinerary differs from the Riau Islands archipelago. Group visits around one base and confirm transport before adding excursions far from the main corridor, allowing time for the region’s river setting.

Allow roughly 3–5 days for Pekanbaru and one or two historical outings with confirmed transport.

### Riau Islands
Batam and Bintan combine regional connections, beaches and towns such as Tanjung Pinang, with opportunities to explore Malay heritage. More distant islands, including Anambas and Natuna, require different transport plans. Decide between a coastal stay near major links and a remote island journey before putting together accommodation and activity bookings.

Allow roughly 3–5 days for one base or 5–7 for two; remote groups need another travel block.

### South Sumatra
Palembang is explored through the Musi River, its neighbourhoods and food, while the highlands around Pagar Alam add the Dempo landscape and Pasemah’s megalithic remains. Lake Ranau offers another extension. Pairing the city with a mountain base avoids turning every excursion into a long return journey to the same accommodation.

Allow roughly 5–7 days for Palembang and a highland base; Ranau may require additional nights.

### West Sumatra
Padang and Bukittinggi combine food and Minangkabau culture with valleys, villages and lakes. Batusangkar, Harau, Maninjau and Sawahlunto offer different extensions to select according to your interests. The Mentawai Islands need a separate trip with arranged hosts and transport. On the mainland, an unhurried circuit makes space for markets and rural scenery.

Allow roughly 6–9 days for a mainland circuit; add a separate travel block for Mentawai.
