## Understand
From the point of view of biodiversity, Sulawesi is part of Wallacea, a transitional ecosystem between the East Asian and Australasian ones, identified by both the WWF and Conservation International as a global conservation priority area. The name commemorates the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, who travelled through the from 1854 to 1862, age 31 to 39, setting up bases on Makassar and Manado, to collect specimens for sale and to study natural history. He noted the differences in mammal and bird fauna between the islands either side of the now-called "Wallace line". West of it, Sumatra, Java, Bali, and Borneo share a mammal fauna similar to that of , including tigers, rhinoceros, and apes, whereas those from Lombok and eastward are mostly populated by marsupials and birds similar to those in Australasia. Sulawesi shows signs of both.

History
Human beings have been living in Sulawesi for at least 39,900 years, as archeologists determined in 2014 that a hand stencil painted in Leang-Leang cave in dates to at least 39,900 years ago. The island almost certainly formed part of the land bridge used for the settlement of Australia and New Guinea.

In there are over 400 granite megaliths, which various archaeological studies have dated to be from 3000 BC to 1300 AD.

The first Europeans to visit the island were Portuguese sailors in 1525, sent from the Moluccas in search of gold. The Dutch arrived in 1605 and were quickly followed by the English, who established a factory in Makassar. In 1905 the entire island became part of the Dutch state colony of the Netherlands East Indies until Japanese occupation in World War II. Following the transfer of sovereignty in December 1949, Sulawesi became part of the federal United States of Indonesia, which in 1950 became absorbed into the unitary Republic of Indonesia.

Religion
Sulawesi's tough terrain, massive size (174,600 km²) and great marine traditions, have combined to cause a wildly divergent set of peoples and cultures, speaking eight major languages and professing Muslim, Christian, Hindu and animist beliefs (not to mention various mixes thereof).

Islam is the majority religion in Sulawesi. The conversion of the lowlands of the south western peninsula in to Islam occurred in the early 17th century. Most Sulawesi Muslims are Sunnis.

Christians form a substantial minority of about 19% on the island. Christians are concentrated on the tip of the northern peninsula around the city of and around Poso in . The famous Toraja people of in Central Sulawesi have largely converted to Christianity since Indonesian independence.

Though most people identify themselves as Muslims or Christians, they often subscribe to local beliefs and deities as well. It is not uncommon for Christians to make offerings to local gods, goddesses, and spirits.

Sulawesi was plagued by Muslim-Christian violence between 1998 and 2007. Over 1,000 people were killed in violence, riots, and ethnic cleansing that ripped through Central Sulawesi. The head of the Islamist militia was shot in 2016 and the island is free of inter-communal violence as of 2026, although limited attacks on police and civilians occurred as recently as 2021.

## Get in
By plane
Sulawesi's main port of entry is 's Sultan Hasanuddin Airport (UPG), which has frequent flights throughout the archipelago. 's airport (MDC) acts as a secondary hub, with some interesting connections eastward to Halmahera and . Both airports are international airports with visa-on-arrival facilities, and flights to and .

Other airports with direct flights from Jakarta include those of , , and .

## Get around
By plane
The sheer size of Sulawesi and the poor state of its roads make plane the transportation method of choice. Flights radiate out from and to all points on the island.

By bus
The Trans-Sulawesi Highway stretches about 2,000 km from Makassar to Manado. Despite the grandiose name, the road is narrow and twisty and can be dangerous for drivers who are unfamiliar with it. Private drivers, regular and sleeper buses are available.

## See
Itineraries
The area around is a fascinating one and well worth a visit. The Torajans are Christians but still maintain strong connections to their Indigenous culture and religion. Locals welcome visitors to take part in their elaborate funeral ceremonies which are interesting but involve animal sacrifices and are not for the squeamish.

## Do
Many tourists come to Sulawesi for the world-class scuba diving. Some fly to Manado, book a dive package for the Bunaken National Park, and do not see any more of Sulawesi. Other diving tourists continue to Bangka Island, Tangkoko National Park, the Lembeh Strait, the Togean Islands, and the famous Wakatobi National Park.

## Buy
Ikat weaving is Sulawesi's best-known craft, with different styles all around the island.

## Eat
Sulawesi cuisine is quite varied, but the best-known is cuisine from the north, an interesting mix of Dutch influences, incredibly spicy chillies and unorthodox ingredients like bat and dog.

## Stay safe
Previously there were riots with bombing and guns in Poso area, . Tension also happened in and , but with no violence. is generally calm. After some years battling the insurgency group in the jungle of Poso area, the head of insurgency group, Santoso (Abu Wardah) was shot in July 2016.

However, there were attacks on police and civilians in 2021, in the Sigi, Parigi Moutong and Poso regions. Most countries' foreign affairs offices warn against travel in these regions.

Plan your itinerarySulawesi’s peninsulas call for regional journeys rather than a quick circuit around the island. The south combines Makassar with the Toraja highlands; the north brings together cities, volcanoes and major underwater experiences. Central and southeastern areas add lakes, forests and island groups with their own connections. Choose one or two sectors and use flights when an overland transfer would absorb too much time. Cultural diversity requires attention to each community’s protocols, particularly during ceremonies. At sea, allow enough days for changes to navigation; in the mountains, adapt walks and outings to the weather and local conditions instead of committing every day to a fixed schedule.

### Getting around
Choose one part of the island or plan flights between distant regions.

### Plan ahead
For diving and rural routes confirm equipment, guides and return transport.

### Culture and pace
Toraja ceremonies are community events: attend only by invitation or local mediation.

### Choose a peninsula
Start with the south, north or a central circuit before combining regions. Check flights between gateways and give long transfers their own travel days.

### Use actual boat timetables
For the Togians or Wakatobi, confirm connections with accommodation and operators. Leave buffer nights before an important flight and ask exactly how to reach your island or lodging.

### Southern Sulawesi
Makassar combines food and maritime heritage before a journey to the Toraja highlands, commonly based around Rantepao. Bira and Mamasa offer different coastal and mountain extensions. Toraja houses and ceremonies are best approached with local guides and clear arrangements, respecting the purpose and context of each encounter within the community.

Allow roughly 7–10 days for Makassar, Toraja and one extension, including actual road travel time.

### Southeast Sulawesi
Kendari opens the mainland region, while Buton and Bau-Bau bring history and coastal life. Wakatobi offers a different stay focused on diving and islands. These places do not form one simple excursion: select an island group or corridor and confirm how flights, boats and final transfers connect before booking.

Allow roughly 6–9 days for one island group and its connections; combining sectors requires more time.

### Central Sulawesi
Palu, Lake Poso and Tentena support overland routes, while Lore Lindu adds forest and megalithic remains with its own guiding needs. Ampana is a planning point for connections to the Togians. Combining interior and islands works well when you reserve substantial blocks and accept that boats may determine the itinerary’s order.

Allow roughly 8–12 days for an inland segment and the Togians, with flexibility for boats and roads.

### Northern Sulawesi
Manado connects with Bunaken diving, the Lembeh area and the Minahasa highlands around Tomohon. Tangkoko adds guided nature outings. Gorontalo, included in this regional grouping, needs time of its own. Alternating a coastal base with an urban or mountain stay avoids continually retracing the same roads between activities each day.

Allow roughly 6–9 days for Manado, the sea and the highlands; add another block for Gorontalo.
