## Introduction

Kalimantan is the part of the island of , the third largest island in the world. The Indonesian part covers around 580,000 km2 (225,000 sq mi) although the vast area is home to only 12 million people, so most of the area, particularly the interior, is very sparsely populated. The vast rainforests in Kalimantan are some of the most bio-diverse areas in the world.

In 2022, Indonesian president Joko Wikdodo announced that Indonesia would be moving its capital from Jakarta to a new purpose-built city called in East Kalimantan.

## Regions
This guide divides the island into four areas:

(Kalimantan Tengah)Cruise on a klotok boat and visit Tanjung Puting National Park

(Kalimantan Timur)also including the province of North Kalimantan Kalimantan Utara

Location of the Derawan Archipelago, where travelers can swim in a lake filled with stingless jellyfish

(Kalimantan Selatan)Visit the Lok Baintan Floating Market on the Martapura River.

(Kalimantan Barat)Home to the city of Pontianak and the remote Betung Kerihun National Park

## Cities

— is called Oil City in Indonesia, because most of the major oil & gas companies have offices there

— capital of South Kalimantan

— the biggest city in Kalimantan. Famous for its floating market.

— capital of Central Kalimantan

— capital and culinary centre of West Kalimantan

— capital of East Kalimantan

— the city of one thousand Chinese temples

— an inshore island and the largest city of North Kalimantan

## Other destinations

— remote highland plateau inhabited by Dayak tribes

— an offshore island with diving and marine attractions

— the gateway to Meratus mountainous range

— Indonesia's ambitious new capital, still very much under construction but now open to limited tourism

— home of the famous Bornean Orangutan

## Understand
While in and English, Kalimantan is used to refer only to the Indonesian-controlled part of Borneo, the term is used to refer to the entire island of Borneo in .

Flora and fauna
The Borneo rainforest is 130 million years old, making it one of the oldest rainforests in the world and 70 million years older than the Amazon rainforest. Borneo is very rich in biodiversity compared to many other areas. There are about 15,000 species of flowering plants with 3,000 species of trees, 221 species of mammals and 420 species of birds. Subject to mass deforestation, the remaining Borneo rainforest is one of the only remaining natural habitats for the endangered Bornean orangutan. It is also an important refuge for many endemic forest species, as the Asian elephant, the Sumatran rhinoceros, the Bornean clouded leopard, and the Dayak fruit bat.

Averages of Kalimantan

Kalimantan has an equatorial climate, with the average temperature ranging between 23 and 31°C. The island receives around 300mm of rain per year, with a light rainy season between March and May, and a more intense one between November and January. Rainfall however considerably lower than in many neighbouring parts of Indonesia.

## Talk
There are 74 living languages spoken in Kalimantan. is the official language, while the Banjar language serves as a lingua franca on much of the island except in West Kalimantan, where Malay is more popular. Other major languages include Dayak (Bornean) and a number of dialects related to the Chinese and (Teochew) languages.

## Get in
By plane
There are several international airports in Kalimantan, with connections to and from Malaysia. In addition, there is a wide array of flight connections to and from other Indonesian islands, mainly .

Supadio Airport (PNK) near is the primary airport on the Indonesian side, with domestic flights from and the main cities of Java.

Syamsudin Noor Airport (BDJ) near is an airport located in , with good connections to destinations throughout Kalimantan and .

Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan Airport (BPN) near with domestic flights from many Indonesian cities, and international flights to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

APT Pranoto International Airport (AAP)

Juwata Airport (TRK) near servers the northeast of Kalimantan, with a range of domestic destinations.

Also the airports of Tanjung Redeb (BEJ), (PKN), Ketapang (KTG), Sampit (SMQ), (PKY) serve destinations on Java island.

By land
There are three official border crossings between and , namely (from West to East) the Biawak-Arau crossing on the -Singkawang road, the Tebedu-Entikong crossing on the Kuching- road (see ), and the Lubok Antu-Nanga Badau crossing in a more remote area. There are other informal crossings used by locals who live in the border area, but their legality is questionable, and you are strongly discouraged from using them as a foreigner to avoid any potential legal issues.

Although Kalimantan shares a border with , there are no border crossings on that segment.

By ferry
There is an international daily ferry connection from in Sabah, Malaysia, to and in North Kalimantan province.

Domestic ferry connections to several ports of Kalimantan (Pontianak, Ketapang, Kumai, Sampit, Banjarmasin, Batulicin, Balikpapan, Samarinda, Tarakan, and Nunukan) are operated by [PELNI](https://www.pelni.co.id/en?bhs=en). In almost all cases it is advisable for tourists to fly instead, except perhaps for trips to Kalimantan from relatively nearby islands such as and the .

## Get around
Distances on Kalimantan are long and public transport is spotty and expensive. The easiest option may well be to book an arranged tour.

## Do
Diving
Most diving activities takes place in the Berau Archipelago in the Celebes sea, around the islands of , Sangaliki and Maratua in East Kalimantan, there are also some less visited dive sites in , these include Batu Payung and Radayan island in the vicinity of and Karimata islands reserve further south, some 100 kilometers of the coast from .

## Eat
In , you may eat Chinese-Indonesian cuisine, Malay cuisine, and Dayak cuisine. Banjarese cuisine is easily found in . When you visit , you can try local Kutai cuisine.

Plan your itineraryKalimantan is Indonesian Borneo: a combination of great rivers, coastal cities, forests and islands best explored in sections. It does not include Malaysian Borneo or Brunei. Connections between river systems can require flights and long travel stages, so choosing a river programme or a coastal corridor makes better use of your time. Wildlife experiences should prioritise responsible observation, while community visits need appropriate hosts and permissions. This division follows Wikivoyage: its eastern region also groups North Kalimantan, although that is a separate administrative province. Leave flexibility for changes to navigation and avoid making a particular wildlife sighting an essential condition of the journey.

### Getting around
Build routes around river basins and actual connections, not map proximity.

### Plan ahead
For forests and wildlife book responsible operators and allow for rain and river levels.

### Culture and pace
Dayak communities are not one culture: ask about local customs.

### One river system or coastline
Choose an arrival gateway and develop the route from there. Compare flights when combining regions; do not assume a fast, continuous road between every destination.

### Arrange boats and hosts
Confirm accommodation, guides, boats and permits before heading to forest areas or remote communities. Ask what the programme includes and how return transfers are arranged.

### The river sets the pace
Rain and water levels can change journey times and routes. Keep buffer days and flexible wildlife expectations; a nature trip does not guarantee particular encounters.

### Central Kalimantan
Kumai and Pangkalan Bun support river programmes towards Tanjung Puting, associated with orangutan conservation and observation. Palangkaraya and Sebangau belong to another corridor with separate logistics. Choose one forest and river experience with enough time, rather than combining distant parks as though they were day trips from the same base.

Allow roughly 4–6 days for a river programme and arrival and departure; other parks need another block.

### East and North Kalimantan
Balikpapan and Samarinda open routes towards the Mahakam, while Berau connects with the coast and Derawan Islands. This grouping also includes the north, with Tarakan and remote inland gateways. Choose between river travel, reefs or a specific expedition: combining all three requires flights, connections and substantially more time overall.

Allow roughly 7–12 days for a river or coastal sector; combine both only with sufficient connections and flexibility.

### South Kalimantan
Banjarmasin is explored through its rivers and markets, with Lok Baintan among the region’s river experiences. Martapura adds crafts and gemstone trading, while Loksado opens the Meratus Mountains. An urban stay and a nature base introduce different landscapes, with excursions arranged through local guides and hosts familiar with each area.

Allow roughly 4–7 days for Banjarmasin and Loksado, including the transfer and activities with local hosts.

### West Kalimantan
Pontianak brings together the Kapuas, equatorial landmarks and Malay, Chinese and Dayak cultures, while Singkawang offers another urban and cultural route. Forest areas such as Gunung Palung or Betung Kerihun require dedicated access arrangements and programmes. Separate a city-based journey from an inland expedition to give each experience the time it needs.

Allow roughly 5–8 days for cities and coast; forest expeditions need additional planning and overnight stays.
