It is not a tourist's paradise. There isn't much to see, but more importantly it is hard to get in or get around because of visa and other permit restrictions. Most visitors are on business in the petro sector. ## Cities — one of Angola's wealthiest cities (oil), Cabinda is fairly pleasant, with a good number of colonial style buildings, and better facilities than in most parts of the country. The Portuguese did at times attempt to control the territory between Cabinda and the rest of their holdings in southwest Africa, which would have made things a lot more convenient for the Angolans today. But the territorial discontinuity of what would become Angola was set by the 1884 Berlin Conference, which established that Leopold of Belgium's personal property of the "Congo Free State" would extend along the Congo River to the Atlantic. The Front for the Liberation of the Exclave of Cabinda (FLEC) has waged a secessionist struggle against the Angolan government since independence. The province's vast oil reserves, first explored by the Portuguese in the 1950s, guarantee that the Angolan government will use its powerful army to maintain tight control. Its cultural description points to Bakongo and Mayombe traditions. Use these names to guide conversations and prepare specific visits. Our suggestion is to begin with the city and coast before adding the interior. Ask your accommodation to help identify a host or guide and agree on the places, duration and return arrangements. ### Maiombe: the forest at the centre Angola’s government includes Mayombe Forest in Cabinda among the seven natural wonders chosen in its national campaign. It is a starting point for understanding the territory’s landscape interest beyond its oil industry. Before travelling to the forest, confirm the exact area, guiding arrangements and access conditions. Ask which route is feasible that day and what to bring; a reserve’s name is not a promise of trails or visitor services. ### A conservation perspective The Global Environment Facility lists a project devoted to integrated conservation of the Maiombe forest ecosystem in Cabinda. That perspective encourages interest in the forest as a living landscape and in the people involved in caring for it. On a visit, seek an explanation of local forest uses and agree on photography with your companions.
